Proper hammer storage is important if you want your tools to give you the lifetime of use that you want out of them. Hammer storage involves hammer care, as well; the hammer not cared for might as well not be stored. This article will look at both.

Hammers should be stored in a fairly cool, dry place, especially those with wooden handles. Too much humidity can cause the wooden handles to swell. Over time, the swelling and subsequent shrinkage will loosen the head, and it may pop off when you try to use it.

One of the best methods of hammer storage are two nails on a wall, one under the head and one under the claw. This will give good support to the hammer and keep it up on the wall where you can find it--always provided, of course, that you remember to put it back when you finish with it.

A drawer is also good for hammer storage, especially if you keep it from getting cluttered. The key is to set aside one drawer for hammer storage and not let anything else go in there so the drawer doesn't become cluttered.

In addition to storage, hammer care is also an important part of keeping your hammer in perfect working order. Metal handled hammers need little care. But wooden ones, on the other hand, should be oiled at least once a year, preferably twice. Put a little cooking oil on an old rag and wipe the hammer handle up and down. Give the oil an hour or so to soak into the wood, then do it again. The oil helps seal the wood and keep moisture from getting into it, which keeps the hammer stronger.

Hammer storage is only half the story. But with storage and hammer care both covered, your hammer will give you years of good use.
